Hansel asked:

Is it possible for a baby to be adopted here in the uk with the mums permission but not the dads?

In short, yes it is. Are you and the baby’s father married? If not, and he has never applied to the courts for a parental responsibility order or a parental responsibility agreement, then he has fewer rights than if the two of you were married or if he had claimed parental responsibility. However, he does still have some rights.

To have your child adopted without the consent of the absent father, you need to first prove that you have taken adequate measures to locate or contact him. After this point if he has still not been found or come forward, his consent to the adoption is not required as he is considered to have abandoned his right to take parental responsiblity.

Putting your baby up for adoption is a big decision, and you’re going to need lots of support. Contact your local council for further information about adoption and to arrange an appointment with the adoption social work team, they’ll be able to provide further advice and support.
