My baby at 4 months was being slightly neglected by her babysitter, and I got her out of it immediately.

She had dried vomit in her hair, and through subtle questions, I found out that the babysitter had "propped the bottle"...had left my baby unattended with the bottle in her mouth propped up on a pillow. The bottle filled her stomach too fast with formula, and she vomited, and layed in her own vomit for long enough for it to dry in her hair.

I walked into the daycare home, and the babysitter was sitting upstairs smoking with her husband in a closed off room, while my daughter slept in the basement, out of sight of any caregiver.

Some easy ways to see if a baby is neglected is by diaper rash. My baby has NEVER had it, because we change her diapers all the time. It takes a lot of neglect to cause diaper rash.

You can get literature from your health department that discusses the signs of neglect. Babies that aren't given enough emotional care often rock back and forth in their cribs to compensate for the lack of physical contact. Very sad.

I hope this helps.

Check if baby is dirty, check if finger nails are kept trimmed, are clothes clean and do they fit? Babies love attention - you can never give them enough therefore it would be wrong to think that a baby that responds to attention must not be getting enough at home. Most babies get excited when given attention, especially if it's a new face (someone other than the regular care givers).

Well of course the obvious. Hungry, smelly, diaper rash from not being changed, things like that. I sounds like your getting to another point though, maybe you can give more information.

I'll say against the last comment, both of my 5 month olds heads are flatish and bald and theyre faarrr from neglected. As soon as they whimper, I run to get them.
I think the best way to tell is if you notice change in a babies behaviour- and if you havent seen them before? Watch for if they shy away from their parents/people they live with. Normally, a well-cared for baby will be clingy, or at least affectionate towards the person they see most often, but if they aren't? Thats a case for some worry.

Normally yes a baby will be very clingy and possibly pep up every time you come around if your the one giving the baby attention. the baby may also be underdeveloped. Banbies theses days are very intelligent. My son had teeth at two months, climbing stairs at five months, walking at nine months as well as beating on kids lol! If you see a difference in a babies charisma from when their in their neglected environment as opposed to a non-neglected environment then it may be easy to diagnosis this as well.
