We just adopted a waiting child with minor special needs from China a yr. ago. Our total fees including travel were around $17,000. The program that is moving now is the waiting child china program. These are children with some level of special needs. The wait is very long if you want a child with no known special needs. Start researching agencies, and not all of them have a waiting child program, just the traditional program. Good luck! Shiree

As mentioned above, with China, the wait is currently at least 3 years to be “matched with a child, and the wait is expected to get longer.
Here’s a site that explains the basic requirements.

If however you are open to adopting a “waiting child” from China, the wait time will be much shorter and the adoption fees are often reduced. These children usually have some level of special needs (although often minor or correctable), or are school-aged rahter then babies or toddlers.

Hi there,

I am an adoptive mom of a little beauty from China. We adopted her when she was 9 months old and she is now almost 4.

You should know that the waiting list for China is VERY long, with the current wait at almost 3 years and likely to increase. If you were to get in line today, it would be very likely that you would be waiting 7+ years.

If that hasn’t scared you off, then you should research agencies in your area that handle adoptions from China. They will tell you everything you need to know about the process, including whether or not you even qualify as China has pretty strict rules for who they allow to adopt.

In the meantime, visit - this is an excellent forum to get support and information from those that have been there, done that, as well as people who are waiting in line. Another great site is, which consists mostly of parents who have adopted internationally.

ETA: Regarding the above comment, the cost for adopting from China is not anywhere close to $35/40,000. Kazi

You have to be a min. of 30 years old and the average cost is aroun 35-40000.00 a really good adoption agency that I know is trust worthy is christian world adoption. A friend of mine adopted a boy from russia. Make sure to check out who ever you go through with the bbb and you state. And have you considered adoptiong from either a private adoption locally or from foster care? With the children in dss you won’t have to pay. And you would still be giving someone a loving home.
