It is my understanding that, legally, all the birthmother is responsible for is posting a notice in the paper in the city of the father's last know residence. You should consult an expert. The professionals at Adoption Network Law Center will be happy to answer any questions that you may have and can help guide you through the adoption process. Teresa

Is it possible yes.

Is it ethical no.

It takes two to tango and he deserves to have the right to parent if he wishes. It IS his child too, like it or not. Some dads can be awesome single parents.

Guaranteed, the child will find out his father was not informed someday and wonder why? Freckle Face

Yes, it is possible for a mother to place a child for adoption without the father finding out.
Is it ethical? No it is not.
In order to have a fully legal adoption you must obtain the father's consent. Anyone who would adopt the baby without having a father's consent on record is opening themselves up for the possibility of legal problems. maybebree

Two things:

1. Absolutely not. Both parents need to sign relinquishment papers, otherwise it's entirely possible for the father to dispute and possibly block or overturn the adoption (rare, but it does happen).

2. Abandoning a child to adoption is almost never ever EVER "The Best Option" **for the child**. If she decided to continue with the pregnancy, then she should pull herself together and parent the kid like the kid expects. If she knew she didn't want it, then she should've done the decent thing and had a bloody abortion. 7rin

Maybe the dad would like to raise his child.
If he is on the borth certificate, you can NOT do it without his consent. LillyRain

If you claim that the father is unknown I think you can. Would you ever regret it? bubblegumh20

Fast forward 15-20 years and this "child" needs medical information, hmmmm, didn't think of that huh. Not a good idea. Besides, maybe the fathers family would be willing to raise this child and give them at the very LEAST half their ancestry. There could be as much if not more damage caused by this half baked idea. No offense, but think it ALL the way through before leaving a person with no ancestry, heritage, or medical info. smarmy

no the child is as much the fathers as the mothers and it would be terrible if she were to do that without telling him. its his baby and the truth will more than likely come out in the future. believe it or not that child may want to know who his/her parents are and search. and he or she will have every right to know who their father is.

adoption is not always the best solution, think about the child here. would u like to be given away by your parents? plenty people bring up their kids young and unmarried and they turn out fine if they are prepared to raise and love the child. the father might actually want this baby. Lish

Its not "her" baby, it's THEIR baby so no, legally it can't be done. Does it happen...sure but there is always the risk the adoption will be stopped or challenged if the father finds out and wants custody. Randy B
