    No, relationship is not the criteria. It is if he provided at least 50% of your support. Support is food, housing, and clothing. You could be a totally unrelated trillionaire and he can claim you.

    Real children, adopted children, foster children, even totally unrelated children who the parents support as a member of the household, could be claimed if all dependency tests are met. And you wouldn’t be reporting them to social security, but the IRS.

    Short story: he will not be punished because he probably didn’t violate tax laws, at least as far as claiming you as a dependent.

    How was he abusive? Did it reach criminal levels? You would report that to law enforcement. If they will take the case.
