Not much of the money goes to the natural mom. There are rules that differ by state as to what is allowed. Generally medical expenses can be covered, maternity clothes, some allowance to help with food and rent. I don't think you would come out ahead financially. It is just to help offset the cost of having a child.

Most of the money goes to the following:
- agency for homestudy (background check, interviews etc to determine if the person/couple is likely to be a good parent)
- agency classes about adoption and what to expect when raising an adopted child
- legal fees for terminating the rights of the natural parents
- outreach/advertising to find women who are considering placing children for adoption
- salaries for adoption agency staff (social workers etc)
- post placement visit to the home after the child is there to ensure things are going smoothly (required by most states)
- travel for adoptive parents if the natural mother is not local (we stayed out of state for 10 days)

I think our adoption cost about $15,000 to $18,000, and less than $2000 went to my daughter's natural mom.

Well, you probably won't get any money, but what you CAN get, is the satisfaction from knowing that you didn't kill your child, and that you gave a child to a couple who wants one and made them very happy.

um...usually in the pockets of lawyers, adoption facilitators, adoption brokers, adoption counselors...basically anyone who gets paid to make sure the adoption happens...

the pregnant woman not so much. maybe some stretchmarks, hemorrhoids, milk she can't use, and a box of sanitary pads...

and maybe, she gets a couple of maternity tops from walmart, and some money for groceries, train fare to the clinic and usually a cheesy "thank you" gift after she hands over the goods.

honestly, i strongly advise any women from accepting gifts...it's places too much pressure to give up the baby. and most women don't know how they'll feel until after the baby is born and real.

ok..seriously, if you are minority (i'm assuming from your avitar that you are non-white) please be aware the any child you deliver will most likely be thought of as "special needs", "hard to place" or "available for a lower cost." in other words, adoption is an industry based on supply and demand. and the demand, my dear are non-minority babies.

if you are looking into adoption to make money, i'd strongly advise against it. if you are not interested in parenting...abortion might not be a bad option.

all i can say is get as much information as you can...

BTW: most adoption agencies ADVISE pregnant women to apply for medicaid. so often the money that the aparents "think" is going towards the mom...is not.

The only time the "birth mom" gets money is when she is being a surrogate and is being paid to carry a baby for another couple. When you put your child up for adoption the couple adopting the baby pays for medical, some clothing and some food expenses. Some couples will even let you live with them rent free so they can be a part of the pregnancy. You will not make a profit. You would be doing a wonderful thing but it would be at the cost of your heart (emotionally) and body. Giving away a child will change you forever but so will abortion.

Money should be no part of your decision you can only do what is right for you.

the lawyers get the money. please reconsider keeping your baby. it will be hard, but life is always hard anyway. but if you know that you would be an abusive or neglectfull parent, maybe. if you are thinking about getting money, you will be disappointed. they pay the doctors and hospitals directly through the lawyer. anyway, you will see that money really has no value compared to the happy face on your baby the first time it smiles at you. also, adoption lawyers will tell you anything, your baby will be with rich people, etc. once they get your signature they care nothing about you or your baby. their only objective is the money. read this book "A Death on Whitebear Lake" you sound very young. listen to your heart. if you need help, try and try till you get it. there are people who care, but it's not the adoption lawyers. may you be blessed with much happiness!!
