Will Medicaid pay for prenatal and birth if baby is given up for adoption?

baby adoption
MSW asked:

My sister is currently pregnant and her prenatal care is being covered by Medicaid (in Arkansas). My husband and I are planning to adopt her baby right at birth. Will Medicaid still cover the prenatal care and birth expenses, or will we be expected to reimburse these costs?

Absolutely. Medicaid can’t deny her coverage because she plans on placing the baby for adoption. In fact, you don’t even need to tell the hospital if you didn’t want to although its much easier for you to have access to the baby.

    Good luck!!

Medicaid will pay for it. My cousin recently placed her daughter for adoption in Feb. 2008 and Medicaid paid for all her prenatal and hospital bills.

Certainly. You won’t be responsible for anything prior to the actual adoption.

yes medicaid will cover the expenses, you will not be expected to pay for any of the babys medical costs until the day the adoption is final

Yes they will pay. No worries and best wishes

If your sister is already on medicaid then she and the baby will be covered for the birth and the baby will be covered until she relinquishes her parental rights and you take placement of the baby. then your own health insurance will kick in for coverage, most likely. but medicaid will stop once you take placement.

    Medicaid will cover it all.

yes they will pay the status of the baby has nothing to do with medicaid paying or not paying. She may not qualifiy without the child so she won’t have it for more than three months- year (depending on the worker) after the baby is born

    They should be covered still.
